Philippians, Radical Joy In Christ

The apostle Paul is the undisputed author of this New Testament letter. The approximate date that Paul wrote this letter is between AD 60-62. This puts him writing at the end of his Roman imprisonment, some ten years since the founding of the Philippian church. The book of Philippians is a Thank You Letter, a letter of encouragement. It is written to thank the congregation and to encourage them to live out their faith with the covenant community. Unlike the letters to the Galatians or Corinthians, there are no major heresies to be corrected, no major sins to be confronted in this little epistle. It deals more with the practical side of Christianity. Paul helps them to know how to live out our faith in Christ in a joyful community. The theme of the book is, “The Joy of Christ in Covenant Community.” In what may be the key verse of Philippians, Paul gives testimony to his joy in Christ, “For me to live is Christ, but to die is gain.” O, if this were the cry of our lives, we would live in the joy of Christ.
