In the passage before us this morning we are again confronted with the lack of understanding that prevailed among Jesus’ inner circle of the Twelve. We shouldn’t stand in judgment of them too harshly or we will condemn ourselves for certain. Our Lord gets at this problem and its cause in what transpired before and during the crossing of the Sea of Galilee to Bethsaida once more. Why can’t some people get what the Bible is saying? Doesn’t it seem that some folks can hear and read passages from Scripture, argue and debate them, and set up a life near them but remain profoundly ignorant of what the Bible is getting at? Do you want to understand the Bible better? Studying the Bible is not for quitters. It is not for those looking for a quick fix of spiritual feel-good-ism. Studying Scripture is not for those who simply want a rule book or confirmation about their own ideas and practices. Understanding the Word of God is a Spiritual work. It is a life-long exercise. We must have the illumination of God’s Spirit, a desire to know and believe Him, and a distrust of self and the world.
