Where are the “hotspots” in our culture today? Where are decisions made, ideas confronted with reality, and lives shaped? Where would you say this kind of engagement is taking place? Perhaps you would names venues such as universities, and halls of government - the so-called ‘town-hall,” through the printed page - books, and journals, or, if you are young enough, you might point to the internet and the flood of information and interaction going on there twenty-four hours a day. Of course, a measure of it happening in all of these and the role of the internet and social media in the process, one might argue, is still in the experimental stage. I have a question for you dear ones, “As I was naming these circles of knowledge, did the worship services of your local church make the list?” In the account before us in Mark’s Gospel, we witness quite literally how the course of a man’s life, a religious sect, a political party, a nation’s future, and the birth of a new nation are set in motion not in the library and halls of learning in Athens, nor the great buildings of the Roman government, but in worship service in Capernaum.
