You have, no doubt, noticed that often what seems to be the issue turns out not to be the main issue. We are often led down the wrong path in our thinking or in our actions because we have started with the wrong premise. Some today have misconceptions about Christianity and Jesus, maybe even about the church. I hope to bring us back to the guiding premise and the north star of the faith of Jesus Christ. To the average American, the scene in Mark’s account in 2:23-28 most likely seems a bit strange. Perhaps you are asking, why is there such a big deal about the Sabbath? What’s the problem here? There were 39 scribal laws surrounding the Sabbath Day during the time of Jesus. These laws controlled everything from how many steps a person could take on the Sabbath to what constituted work. Breaking these was a serious infraction in the Jewish community in the first century.
