Why was it necessary for Jesus to be baptized? Why did John the Baptist try to refuse the rite to Him? Why is the baptism of Jesus included in all four Gospels in the New Testament (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John)? Why is Jesus' baptism essential to understanding His Gospel and the preaching of John? Some events change everything. They signal the ending of one era and the beginning of another. Historians tell us that at the end of World War I technology had not advanced a great deal. During the First World War, the war was fought with dirigibles such as the Hindenburg, by-planes such as the one flown by The Red Barron, and tanks that hardly moved. But by the end of World War II, we had entered a new world. The world witnessed the entrance things fast-moving tanks, submarines, fighter planes, jets, rockets, aircraft carriers, and the atomic bomb. The world would never be the same again. In some respects, we might say this was a regression that looked like a progression in society. Nevertheless, for better or for worse, we had entered, officially, the modern world. We see this with the crowning of David as king of Israel, and perhaps more so with the coronation of David’s son Solomon. A new era had begun, an exciting and blessed time of God’s blessing! Jesus’ baptism by John the Baptist must be understood in this way. Once again, we read of an epoch revelation of God’s doings to which we have become numb. Why is this recorded in all of the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John? What is its significance? What did the first-century Church see in this that the church today has largely missed?
