The Jews of Jesus day had covered the Commandments of God with the oral traditions of the elders. In the passage before us he addresses the whole issue by helping us see the connection between the oral traditions and disobedience to the Commandments and how that produces legalism and a false confidence in God’s acceptance. “This soon becomes a peg for the wider question why the disciples do not conform their lives as a whole to the demands of the Pharisee’s code, of which hand washing is only one.” D.E. Nineham, Saint Mark, p. 129. For us this becomes a question of avoiding the lies of legalism, traditionalism, and hypocrisy.
