We hear a lot of talk today about goals, purpose, and mission. We are often told to narrow down what we want and to mark out the steps needed to attain it. Of course, there is wisdom in this advice, but many follow this and remain confused and immobilized. This is true in sports, work, and life. It is even accurate regarding the spiritual life. Why do so many follow this instruction but gain so little ground in the things of God? The reality is that we must not only single out what we desire, choosing where and what we want; but we must also determine what we must leave. We must leave some things as we follow the teaching. That is what we see in the account before us today. We see our Lord making His mission sharp, not for Himself, but for the disciples and perhaps even the people of Capernaum. He does this by what He chooses and by what He leaves.
