John 2:1-11 Has Your Religion Run Dry?

October 8, 2017 Speaker: Pastor Scott Slaughter Series: The Gospel of John, Life In God

Topic: Jesus Christ, Messiah, Salvation Scripture: John 2:1–11

At first, we find ourselves asking why this was included in John’s gospel. It seems to be an insignificant miracle that Jesus performed. But upon closer thought, one realizes that no miracle is “insignificant.” That is contradictory. The word for a miracle that John uses here may also be translated “sign.” This word means that the miracle is not the point but is pointing to something or someone greater. When we consider this with the knowledge that this was Jesus’ first miracle and the beginning of his public ministry we are driven to consider that there may be more here than we first imagined. Why did Jesus use this miracle to begin his ministry? It must be significant. It is.

A.W. Pink, “Judaism still existed as a religious system [there were purifications] but it ministered no comfort to the heart. It had degenerated into a cold, mechanical routine, utterly destitute of joy in God.”Many young people today have left churches because of the deadness, the apathy, the emptiness, brought on the church by liberal theology and progressive philosophy. They often do not know what is the cause but they reject the empty traditionalism, religion without Jesus Christ.
