Psalm 35 Our God Is Greater

Topic: Psalms, Citizenship, Kingdom Of God Scripture: Psalm 35

The plea and teaching of Psalm 35 may be gleaned from verse 1, “Contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me!” David, in this Psalm, calls on the Lord to fight for him against those who persecute him, against those who resist the anointing of God upon him. These people were a great trial upon David. They made his life very hard by seeking to destroy him, stop his leadership, and, at times, do him physical harm.

Most certainly we are not David. We must be careful to give the primary interpretation of the historical setting. Having recognized that, we must also not make the mistake of not applying David’s teaching to our own hearts and lives.

The reality is David is not different from any of God’s people who endeavor to be faithful to God’s Word. As David encountered enemies who opposed him because they really oppose God, so will everyone who seeks to believe and follow God’s Word.

2 Timothy 3:12–14 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it (ESV)

What are we to do when we find ourselves the target of such Satanic opposition? David cried out to God who is greater than all his enemies to defend him and so should we.
