The worship of God is a powerful and transforming experience for His people. If you are not transformed through worshipping Him, you need to do some deep soul searching before Him in prayer. In 2022 we see many gatherings being labeled as worship and these gatherings are characterized by all kinds of emotions and attitudes. Some gatherings claim to be worship services but spend their time railing on social justice, their political agenda, and what has become known as “the next thing.” Such meetings are generally characterized by an attitude of anger, retaliation, or sadness. Other meetings more resemble rave parties or pop music concerts than a worship service to the Almighty God, Creator of heaven and earth. What are the basics of biblical worship? Can you discern the difference? What is our attitude as we gather as the people of God through the new covenant in Jesus Christ? Although as we shall see, there is a mixture of emotive attitudes when in the presence of the holy and transcendent God, there is one word that does an excellent job of bringing them all together. That word is “awe.” Throughout Holy Scripture anyone to whom the Divine Being revealed Himself was shocked to the core of his being and dumbstruck with an overwhelming sense of awe while in His presence.
