Why do some people think church is boring? Could it be that the do not understand worship and church as much as they think? The transcendence of God is one of the most pertinent doctrines since the dawn of modernity. Louis Berkhof decries the neglect of this truth in the contemporary era, “The transcendence of God is soft-pedaled, ignored, or explicitly denied.” By the term ‘transcendence’ is meant that the God of the Bible is presented as, is, infinitely greater than His creation. Whereas the first may be thought of as describing being and position; the second indicates divine activity. Let’s consider some Scripture and terms that will help us think through this.
