MONEY MATTERS! It doesn’t take us long in our reading of the Book of Proverbs to see that how to manage and use our money in obedience to God is brought before us repeatedly. Why is this do you suppose? It may be simply that God wants His people to know how to manage their money well so that they may be able to take care of themselves and their offspring. Perhaps this is the meaning of Proverbs 13:22: "A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, …" More likely, we are being instructed in the wise use of money so that we will not fall into the love of money or the deceitful practice of getting it dishonestly. In His sermon on the Mount of Olives, our Lord Jesus warned us against serving money and not God. Matthew 6:24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. (ESV) We are warned in the New Testament not to love money, to resist greed, and to refuse money gained dishonestly. In other words, we will either rule money by using it to serve God and His kingdom, or the love of money will rule us. We cannot serve them both as masters. By this, we see that money matters, not because we want to be rich or to merely take care of ourselves and our families. It matters because with it we can do the work of God. God gives us an increase for the financing of His work, not for expanding our comforts. Tonight, let’s explore God’s Word in the Book of Proverbs to learn how we might make mammon serve God!
