Do some church people seek special privileges and more influence because of their affluence and position? Yes, it is a constant problem that clergy have to deal with. Wealth, either its presence or its absence, can be a trial. The question inevitably, if not secretly arises, "Should church members who give more have more influence within the church?" Obviously, the biblical answer to this question is a resounding, No! Nevertheless, the problem that James, in his time, dealt with in this group of believers has a habit of resurfacing again and again. Why is this the case? James gives us the answer but we will have to wait until we get to chapter 4. Previously we looked at joy through trial; then we proceeded to the necessity of God’s wisdom when we find ourselves being tested. Now, we turn our attention to James' next subject, (a very interesting topic it is) which is, “How We Have Equality in the Church.” In verses 9-11, James deals with the attitude of the poor Christian in his poverty and the wealthy Christian in his prosperity. Whether you are poor or rich in this world is neither right nor wrong. That is not the issue. James is not saying it is more blessed to be poor more a sign of God’s favor that you have a measure of wealth. Instead, he calls us to embrace certain responsibilities that go along with both. You may not always be able to change your monetary status but you can help your attitude. We are called to reflect our faith in Jesus Christ in every position of life.
