In verse 18 Paul commands us to be "filled" with the Spirit, i.e. "controlled by the Spirit" as a person who is filled with wine is controlled by it. Then Paul moves on to describe what the Spirit-controlled believer is like. Paul says that Spirit-controlled believers sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to one another, are submissive to authority and each other, and give thanks continually to God. I do not believe that the average Christian understands how important it is to give thanks to God. The Apostle Paul lays out for us in verse 20 the truth about giving thanks.
