Everybody Loves Esther

Series: Esther, For Such a Time as This Topic: Genesis, Israel, Jews, Abraham Scripture: Esther 2:1–18

The closer we look at the Book of Esther, the more we are forced to ask the question, is this story about Esther, or is this story about her uncle, Mordecai the Jew? If you happen to be asking that question already, chapter two will do little to answer it. If I were forced to decide whether the second chapter of Esther is about Mordecai or about Esther, reluctantly, Esther would be my answer, mainly because though Mordecai’s involvement is important, everyone’s eyes are quite literally on the beautiful Esther. What is amazing is the fact that God has planned to use the drunken pride of the king of a king to elevate someone who is at the lower levels of Persian society to the queen of that very Empire. The astute student of Scripture will immediately be reminded of Joseph and his elevation to Prime Minister of Egypt, recorded in the last chapters of Genesis. Yahweh, the Lord God of Israel, is once again protecting His covenant people.
