God's Wisdom In The World
Series: 1 Corinthians, The Cross and Its Community Scripture: 1 Corinthians 2:6–16
Paul has been working to clear out of the minds of the Corinthians Christians their worldly love for philosophical rhetoric. He has pointed out to them that this love is not from Christ, nor does it lift the Gospel within the church. Rather, he shows that God’s message is considered to be foolish nonsense to the powerful of this world. Why would a message focused on the death of Jesus Christ on a Roman cross have relevance? Having driven this point home to the congregation, Paul now clarifies that the Gospel is not foolish; it only appears foolish to those who are lost in their sins. He desires that Christians understand that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is, in fact, God’s wisdom.
