FOUR 'R's of the LORD's SUPPER | A Guide for Families & Churches
Pastor: Pastor Scott Slaughter Series: 1 Corinthians, The Cross and Its Community Topic: Worship, Evangelism, Church Growth, Outreach
This is a simple outline you may use as a guide for yourself and your family to guide your understanding, attitude toward, and practice of the Lord’s Supper. I encourage you to write these Four Words in the back or in the margin of your Bible for future reference. Churches today can make mistakes similar to the Corinthian Church if we're not careful when observing the Lord’s Supper. Some Christians are careless in this regard; others simply do not know. Often Christians reverence the Lord’s Supper but fail to teach it to their children. As a result, their children do not understand the seriousness of irreverence. The Supper is holy not because it is magical, but because it speaks of Jesus Christ and His sacrificial death for us. To mock or make light of the Supper is to do the same to Jesus Himself. It is a time for celebration and giving thanks to God. Over time we tend to lose sight of the holiness of God. We must guard against this tendency. That is what happened in the Corinthian Church. They allowed the Lord’s Supper to become nothing more than a common banquet, feast, almost a party. And, like most parties, there were factions present. Some worked to shame others and some were even gorging themselves and getting drunk.
