No Nonsense WAYS to Love Your Neighbor, Pt 1/3 from Proverbs

Can you love your neighbor by doing nothing? When we think about how to fulfill this commandment it can be a little overwhelming. Perhaps you’ve thought, “How exactly do I do this?” Or, “What constitutes loving one’s neighbor? If we are not careful we can become stuck with good intentions but with little to no action. The Apostle John warns us about this in his first letter. 1 John 3:16–18 By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. [17] But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? [18] Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. (ESV) Since the Book of Proverbs is about the many real-life ways that God’s Commandments impact daily life, we can find many examples of what loving one’s neighbor looks like. We often think of loving our neighbor in terms of positive actions and there’s certainly nothing wrong with that. As we consider what the Book of Proverbs says on the subject we will find that, like God’s Commandments, we learn what not to do first. Like the Ten Commandments, Proverbs teaches us how to love our neighbor through the use of negative statements (commands). Like the United States Constitution, the people are blessed by the restrictions of government control through the use of negative laws.
