“God is love.” Quote this almost anywhere and you will get a resounding agreement. Clarify what the Bible means by the statement that God is love and the approving crowd will likely diminish. Undoubtedly, you have heard this truth used to justify many unusual and sinful things within the church and society. Let’s take the time to discover what Scripture means by this beloved truth. It has been observed that in 1 Corinthians 13 the Apostle Paul gives us his inspired sonnet about Christian love. Lesser known, unfortunately, is the fact that 1 John 4:7-12 is the Apostle John’s poetic expose on the nature of Christian love. And, in some ways, it brings light to the topic not easily seen in 1 Corinthians 13. I think John’s expose provides a sound theological framework for interpreting 1 Corinthians 13. What is the distinguishing characteristic of being a Christian? Does the Bible indicate that there is such a thing? It surely does; in the Book of 1 John we are told that the presence or absence of love for other believers is a defining mark of true conversion. What is love? What does it mean to love like Christ? What is Christian love? After all, doesn’t the Bible say that God is love? Shouldn’t love to be one of the dominant characteristics of genuine Christians? The answer to that question is YES. But hold on a minute! Does this mean that Christians accept all manner of sin and blasphemy against God and His holiness in the name of love? And, if they do not they are then “unloving?” The Bible is the most powerful book in the world! Join Lead Pastor of Coggins Church of Lexington Pastor Scott E.
