In his classic study, “The Treasury of David,” C.H. Spurgeon writes, “Except the Lord’s clients shall find new influence from God from time to time in their troubles, they are but as dead men in their exercise…” Allow me to rephrase this in modern terms, “If the people of God do not have fresh revivals in their personal life from God from time to time in their troubles, they are like dead men in their Christian life…” In other words, if we do not regularly have fresh working in our lives by the Holy Spirit, we can be like, spiritually speaking, like dead men walking. When it comes to your spiritual life, do you at times feel like you are walking around not experiencing the vibrant work of God in you? Perhaps you feel that way tonight. This is what the Psalmist addresses for us in the verses before us.
