The Missional Nature of Worship - Psalm 96

December 2, 2020 Speaker: Pastor Scott Slaughter Series: The Book Of Psalms, Songs & Prayers to the King

Topic: Psalms, Citizenship, Kingdom Of God Scripture: Psalm 96:1–13

In Psalm 95 we gave special consideration to some of the elements of vital worship. Psalm 96 is also a Psalm about the nature of worship. In Psalm 96 we are given a conception of biblical worship. In this Psalm we see the scope of biblical worship; we see its reach and its boundaries. In this Psalm, we also come to see that all true worship has movement and expectation. Biblical worship has a perspective; it looks forward, forward to the parousia, to the judgment of God, to the consumption of all things. Worship that is static is dead and not living, not vital. When we come before God with biblical faith and understanding our worship is not mere religious activity or formalism, neither is an outlet for emotion but we look and long for the appearing God Himself. Worship is at its heart longing for the appearance, presence, and reconciliation with God Himself through His Son Jesus Christ.
