Are there times prayers do not work, when answers are not forthcoming? Does God leave us to the horrors of persecution and pain? J.J. Stewart Perowne calls this “…The darkest, saddest Psalm in all the Psalter.” This is the only Psalm where the Psalmist finds no comfort and experiences no resolution within the Psalm itself. Usually, the cry at the beginning of the Psalm is comforted by the blessings of God at the end but not so in Psalm 88. What are we to make of such a Psalm?
