Zion, City Of Our God - Psalm 87

September 9, 2020 Speaker: Pastor Scott Slaughter Series: The Book Of Psalms, Songs & Prayers to the King

Topic: Psalms, Citizenship, Kingdom Of God Scripture: Psalm 87:1–7

Psalm 87 cast a vision of world peace under God. It is a prophecy that anticipates the day when the unbelieving peoples of the world here represented by the nations of Egypt, Babylon, Philistia, Tyre, Cush, and others will be received as citizens of Zion. “Zion” is the city of God and the political name for God’s rule over His people.

J.M. Boice enlightens us to this in his commentary on the Psalms. “Psalm 87 embraces such a vision [world peace under God]. It is a prophecy that anticipates a day when the heathen nations of Egypt, Babylon, Philistia, Tyre, and Cush, and no doubt many others since these are clearly representative, will be received as citizens of Zion, the political name for God’s rule over God’s people from Jerusalem.”

This psalm fits nicely with Psalm 86 which speaks of God subduing the nations. Here the nations are born into God’s rule and praise Him for it (verse 6-7).
