Topic: Psalms, Worldview, Philosophy, Culture Scripture: Psalm 83:1–18

Psalm 83 is the last of the Asaph Psalms. Its genre is what is called an imprecatory psalm. In these types of psalms, the writer calls upon God to judge those who are persecuting His people and opposing God. Imprecatory psalms are notoriously hard to interpret. With the call to swift judgment, these psalms seem contradictory to our Lord’s command to forgive our enemies and to turn the other cheek.

As always, the answer lies within the Scriptures themselves. The cardinal rule of interpretation is to interpret Scripture with Scripture. When we begin to compare what God has said regarding these issues across the whole of Scripture we begin to get the picture of what is going on and how these psalms play into the plan of God.
