Will The Person In Charge Please Stand? - Psalm 75

June 10, 2020 Speaker: Pastor Scott Slaughter Series: The Book Of Psalms, Songs & Prayers to the King

Topic: Psalms, Worldview, Philosophy, Culture Scripture: Psalm 75:1–10

In Psalm 75 the writer Asaph, once again, deals with a heavy and difficult subject. In this short chapter Asaph wrestles with the question of “Who is in charge?”

Haven’t you pondered that question? It is certainly one of the greatest philosophical dilemmas of all time. How one answers this question determines every single detail of a person’s life. What you believe about who is ultimately in charge of all things will set the trajectory of your entire life and the life hereafter. What a nation, culture, people, or community believe about this issue will set in motion a million actions and reactions, responsibilities, and consequences and ultimately decide its outcome. This is no joke! And yet, how little time is invested in deciding the answer in most cases.

As we begin our study of Psalm 75, we need to take note that Asaph is not the only speaker. In fact, he is only one voice out of four in the span of ten short verses. Here is the breakdown of those speaking in this amazing portion of God’s Word.

  • The congregation speaks in verse 1.
  • God speaks in verses 2 through 5.
  • The priest or preacher is speaking in verses 6 through 8.
  • Asaph speaks in verses 9 and 10.

As worship should be, Psalm 75 is a conversation. The great discussion is presented by the congregation. God replies with summary sovereignty; to which the preacher makes application to the congregation. Asaph closes the discussion by affirming the truth he declared at the outset “I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.”

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We need to give deep thought and humble consideration to this question of “who’s in charge at the end of the day?”
