An Urgent Cry to God for Help - Psalm 69

April 29, 2020 Speaker: Pastor Scott Slaughter Series: The Book Of Psalms, Songs & Prayers to the King

Topic: Psalms, Trials, Suffering, Depression, Scripture: Psalm 69:1–36

In Psalm 69 the psalmist is being persecuted to the breaking point by those who claim faith as well. He is being afflicted and attacked by those who say they love God while they despise godliness. We are told that they lie against him accusing him falsely. He cries out to God for help reminding the Lord that, though he confesses his personal sins, he is not guilty of those things of which he is being accused. The psalmist maintains his innocence writing that his obedience to God is evident and that he is being persecuted for following God zealously while expecting all those who claim religious affection to do the same. Instead, they attack his character and slander his name. They accuse him of wrong and scorn his devotional acts of fasting and mourning. These people are more progressive in their religion apparently. They want none of his Scriptural worship and heartfelt holy lifestyle.

This psalm has been applied by the New Testament writers to our Lord. John says that the “zeal for God’s house had eaten him [Jesus] up,” referring to this passage. It was said of Judas that “His habitation would be empty.” Psalm 69 clearly has a prophetic reference to Jesus as the messiah. But let us not lose sight that the passage refers also to all believers who follow the Savior’s gospel and how they expose the hypocrisy of the false religionists by their faithful love for God and His Word.
