In every sport, in all disciplines, there is a cardinal rule. There is one piece of wisdom that can be given to an athlete, craftsman or artist who has begun to lose his edge. Can you name it? I am sure you know it! “Get back to the basics.” “Remember the fundamentals.” We are now moving into the meat of the book of Philippians. The Philippians, as we’ve said, are not wandering off into false doctrine. They have not been removed from the gospel of Jesus but they are in danger and so are we.

In chapter 3, Paul the Apostle addresses the issue of legalism and the threat it presents to the gospel of Christ. He does this by exposing the fallacies of thinking human achievement could ever contribute to our righteousness before God. He also expounds the riches we have in Jesus Christ and therefore the worthlessness of seeking to add anything to the work of Jesus on the cross.
