The Shepherds Were Frightened, Part 2

December 15, 2019 Speaker: Pastor Scott Slaughter Series: The Good Shepherds

Topic: Christmas, Incarnation, Jesus Scripture: Luke 2:8–13

What does it mean to fear God? Or perhaps, in our times, the question should be, Should we fear God?

Jerry Bridges, author of “The Joy of Fearing God,” illustrates how far we have fallen in Christian circles that we should ask such a question when he recounts a Christian leader’s dismay over his title.

“The fact that a Christian leader would respond to this concept with a puzzled look tells us something about the current state of Christianity. There was a time when committed Christians were known as God-fearing people. This was a badge of honor. But somewhere along the way, we lost it. Now the idea of fearing God, if the thought of at all, seems like a relic from the past. That’s to our detriment. The fear of God is actually as relevant today as it was in bygone generations.” p. 1

I couldn’t agree more.

These shepherds, we’re told, were overcome with fear. It is said they were filled with great fear! So, I ask us again to ponder the question, What does it mean to fear God?
