The Early Church & Spiritual Joy, Part 1

November 13, 2019 Speaker: Pastor Scott Slaughter Series: Overcoming Anxiety, Keys to Spiritual Joy!

Topic: Discipleship, God's Will, Obedience to God Scripture: Romans 12:1–2

God’s people should be characterized by joyfulness. When Christians grumble and complain and do not have joy and contentedness, it gives a false impression of God and Christianity to the lost around us. On the other hand, when an unbeliever encounters a joyful Christian, he or she is quick to take notice. God did not leave us in this world without comfort. Our Savior has given us a reason to rejoice. Jesus said to his disciples, “In this world, you shall have tribulation but be of good cheer for I have overcome the world.” When we stop looking for happiness in things and inexperience and begin searching the Word of God for Christ’s joy, we will find that diligence in the spiritual disciplines brings Spirit-given joy.

The early church set a good example for us. Let us, first, establish that there is such a thing as Spirit-wrought joy that can be received from God Himself. There is much evidence that many in the early church overcame great stress and turmoil through God’s peace and power. Tonight, we will give some special consideration to the early church along these lines, as recorded in Holy Scripture.
