The Doctrine of the Depravity of Man Demonstrated

Topic: Psalms, Worldview, Philosophy, Culture Scripture: Psalm 53

Psalm 53 is a parallel psalm to Palm 14 and both are more or less quoted in the New Testament book of Romans chapter 3. Psalm 53 seems to have a historical setting which remains unidentifiable but real none the less. The historical setting seems to be an invasion of Judah on the scale of 2 Kings 18 & 19 when Sennacherib the Assyrian sought to destroy Judah. Judah was ruled by King Hezekiah at the time.

AS important as the historical setting is, it seems that we are meant to see the larger picture of fallen man’s rebellion against God and His people. This is known as the doctrine of the total depravity of man. The doctrine of depravity explains the evil fallen nature of man against His Creator. It explains man better than any philosophy or doctrine ever produced. This is because it is easily observed in Scripture. The Bible is the only book that explains the anomaly of mankind. Man can be kind and generous because he was made in the image of God but he can be utterly corrupt, deadly brutal, and fiendishly filthy because he is in total rebellion against a holy God. God in this equation is both Judge and Deliverer. Let’s see this doctrine demonstrated in the verses of Psalm 53.
