Living Beyond, 3/3, The Believer & The Family - The Real Issue

May 19, 2019 Speaker: Pastor Scott Slaughter Series: Colossians - The Supremacy of Christ

Topic: Parenting, Grand-parenting, Family, The Home, Genesis Scripture: Colossians 3:18– 4:1

This portion is following the teach set down in the previous verses concerning filling our lives with the Word of God. He has taught the Colossian Christians that Scripture should give us an over-arching principle for living and working. He shows us that Scripture must be accurately applied to us. It should construct and guide our way of living and working for the glory of God. Through Scripture Christ, our Lord’s authority is extended to us. It is His written will for our lives. Through it, we find happiness and holiness for this life and the life to come.

Often when this text is discussed, usually in heated tones, it is because it has been separated from its greater context of the Lordship of Christ through His Word. Our faith in Jesus Christ changes everything. We are being made new. The transformation is gradual; taking place as we through the Spirit submit and follow the gospel’s teaching. This the second part of the Great Commission where Jesus commanded us to “Teach them to obey whatever I have commanded you.” It is one thing to say that we believe the Bible and quite another to believe that it is sufficient for our lives. The proof of our belief in anything is how much we conform our life to its reality. This being said, we can be sure that there is no truer test to our beliefs than how we shape our homes. Will the gospel be allowed to shape your home and relationships? Is Jesus Christ really your King? If so, then that belief will prepare our hearts and minds for obedience to the Scriptures.

Having laid this contextual groundwork, let’s dig a little deeper into the underlying issue in this passage before we break it down so that we may reassemble its teaching for our lives before God.
