Genesis 38 & 39 Judah & Jospeh Compared

Topic: Genesis, Israel, Jews, Abraham Scripture: Genesis 38–39
The chosen people were a mess, spiritually speaking. So far within this little clan of Hebrews, we have seen deceit, cowardice, polygamy, theft, murder, idolatry, and incest. The choice of “firstborn” status has been reduced one by one from Reuben, to Simeon, to Levi, and now to Judah. With Judah, we see that intermarrying and intermingling of religion with the Canaanites is beginning to happen. If this keeps up, there the bloodline will be lost. But God, moved by His sovereignty once again chooses to select in order to save.
Some scholars have debated chapter 38s place but it would seem that the writer wishes his readers to make this comparison. Reuben, Simeon, and Levi were out of favor for their sins of incest or treachery, Judah was next in line for the Patriarchal blessing but Judah is shown to be intermarrying and intermingling faiths. Joseph is sent by the hand of God to Egypt to preserve their lives and their faith.
