Role Of Sacrifice & Remembrance In Worship - Atonement & Reconciliation, Session 5
January 7, 2018 Speaker: Pastor Scott Slaughter Series: Thirsting For God, Learning To Worship God Biblically
Topic: Worship, Evangelism, Church Growth, Outreach Scripture: Exodus 12:21–28, Colossians 2:6–19
Have you ever wondered why God commanded His people in the Old Testament to put animals to death in a ritual sacrificial system? Why does the Bible place so much emphasis upon the role of sacrifice in the Old Testament? What, if any, is the influence of the Old Testament sacrificial system upon New Testament worship practices? Does the fact that Jesus’ death on the cross fulfilled the Old Testament sacrifices mean that the concept of sacrifice is now removed from our worship in the New Testament era? Is there something about the practice of Old Testament sacrifices that is inherent to a proper understanding of and participation in worship?
- Sacrifices: The idea runs deeply in Biblical worship.
- Substitution: The basic idea conveyed in O.T sacrifices.
- Savior: Jesus is our sacrifice, our substitute, our Savior.
- Substance: Ways N.T. worship reflects this message:
- The ordinances
- Preaching & teaching
- Prayer
- Singing
- Faith
- Confession and repentance
- Response: Giving thanks, doxology, and God-ward living
