The Song of Mary, Part 2
December 9, 2018 Speaker: Pastor Scott Slaughter Series: Carols From the First Christmas
Topic: Christmas, Incarnation, Jesus Scripture: Luke 1:46–55
The distinguishing characteristic of Mary’s prayer is humble praise. The Latin name for Mary’s song of praise is The Magnificat, meaning her song magnifying God. The term “Magnificat” comes from the opening line translated into Latin, Magnificat anima, mea, Dominum, which in English are “My soul magnifies the Lord.” Perhaps you have heard the beautiful song by the same title in which Mary’s song is set to music.
Mary’s song flows from a heart filled with faith and complete, joyful submission to the sovereign plan of God. She was delighted and humbled to be blessed in this profound way. The will of God was her life and joy. When she heard the news from the angel, she was overcome with gladness and her heart overflowed with Spirit-inspired praise to God!
